"I had to teach myself to walk, read and write again and when I eventually got better I wanted to help others and make sure it doesn't happen to them," she said.
"Spreading the word about kindness, being kind is how we proactively decrease bullying.
"It's always been kindness but we're now pushing that more and it's not just kindness in schools, it's in work places, the environment and to yourself.
"Last year we changed the laws for bullying..the law only looked at the physical violence aspect not the psychological trauma."
She said the results had been inspiring, as she had a letter from a student who said their bully had apologised to them face-to-face after one of her talks.
In terms of her nomination Ms Cunningham said she did not do it to be recognised, it was all driven by passion.
"It's nice to be recognised," she said.
"For me it just shows all the work that I've put in and for me being traumatised at a young age it's all worth it."
Winners of the awards will be announced at a gala presentation on Friday, May 22.
