About 10pm on January 3, thieves entered the fire station at Weymouth and stole a base-station radio transceiver.
The neighbouring Pipers River station was also targeted, but entry was not gained.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Inspector Adam Mollineaux of North East Division said the theft was particularly callous, given the bushfire situation nationally and locally.
"We have bushfires burning across the country, including here in Tasmania," he said.
"Emergency services and local volunteer brigades such as Weymouth and Pipers River are preparing for another very high fire danger day tomorrow and something like this happens - it beggars belief."
Members of the public who saw any person or people or vehicles acting suspiciously near Weymouth Road, Weymouth, or School Road Pipers River on Friday evening or has any other information that may assist the investigation are asked to contact George Town Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
