The motion was put forward by Councillor Janet Drummond at the council's meeting on Monday.
It asked that a report be made into the formation of a working group of interested councillors with the aim to see what the council could do about climate looking into the future.
Specifically, the group would review the council's Responding to Climate Change Municipal Management Plan from September 2013.
It would then revise the action plan to take into account the changed climate landscape, and bring a new plan to council for its consideration.
Cr Kylie Wright voiced her support for the motion.
"I think it's something we should be looking at doing," she said.

Cr Barry LeFevre questioned whether it should be a job for the council's NRM committee.
However, Cr Drummond said the committee was already under a lot of pressure with low resources.
Mayor Mick Tucker said a lot of the questions being asked around the table were valid, however the motion being discussed was simply asking for a report.
It was an extremely worthwhile cause, deputy mayor John McGiveron said, but it was important to take into account the great work the council had already done and what was working.
Cr Drummond agreed the group would need to look into and build on what was in place.
Cr Margaret Osborne asked if the report would outline how such a committee would work.
The report would show the best way forward, Cr Tucker said.
General manager John Brown said the report would need to provide information on how a working group would work if recommended.
"The report will flesh out how to do a review and how it would be managed," he said.
The motion passed unanimously.
