Councillors voted against the officer's recommendation, which was not to go forward with the free parking proposal, at their meeting on Thursday.
Councillors voted in favour of a motion put forward by mayor Albert van Zetten, requesting the City of Launceston general manager develop options to introduce free parking in the council-owned multi-storey car parks.

A report presenting options for free parking, for two car parks in Paterson Street and one in Elizabeth Street, will be presented to council in August.
A previous report, conducted in November 2018, found against the implementation of free parking in council car parks for various reasons, including: that the car parks account for only 13 per cent of the city's parking, that council's car parks are already running at near capacity for the majority of business hours, and that a similar trial operated in 2006 demonstrated no change in city visitation.
