With the arrival of cooler weather and the official beginning of winter, The Examiner has launched its annual Winter Relief Appeal.
Housing shortages and rental crises have not been foreign concepts to Tasmanians the last couple of years, but this year Launceston has begun to see the effects of housing stress. More and more people are doing it tough and the face of poverty is changing.
Recent statistics show that the number of older women fleeing domestic violence has increased as the stigma around mental health and violence is lifted.
Conversation also comes into play with the changing and open dialogue around domestic violence. The rate of domestic violence reports has increased since the national conversation began in earnest in 2014. With high-profile campaigns came more reports of domestic violence.
Drugs and gambling also have major impacts on people and families.
That's why we've chosen to share with you Tori*'s story, while also maintaining her request for privacy. Just one person struggling through winter, whether it be male or female, old or young, is one too many.
There are moments in life that can force people onto Struggle Street. Whether it be the loss of a job, a death in the family, poor health or the rise in living expenses such as petrol, rent, groceries and power bills.
The Examiner's Winter Relief Appeal is celebrating 61 years and, once again. we are calling on the generosity of Northern Tasmanians to support us in our endeavour.
The Winter Relief Appeal supports four Northern Tasmanian charities - St Vincent de Paul, the Benevolent Society, Red Cross and City Mission.
In 1977, 19 years into our appeal, the target was $6000. For 2019 we would like to reach the $75,000 mark. It's important to stress that every dollar can impact a life.
We are grateful for the large donations, but the gold coins can add up to a generous total. We ask everyone in the community who can donate, to give what they can to help change the lives of their family, friends, neighbours and community.
