After securing nail-biting wins in their past two games, Anthony Stewart's side will meet Taranaki Mountaineers at 5pm on Friday before travelling north for a 1pm Sunday clash with second-bottom Supercity Rangers.
Smith said the weekend's games would give a good indication of where his side sits ahead of three consecutive fixtures against third-placed Canterbury Rams.
"The two sides we play aren't in the four but they're both around where we are so they're both winnable games, no doubt about that, but if we don't bring our A-game we could easily lose both," Smith said.
"If we want to be a chance to make finals we've definitely got to win both of those games in New Zealand."
The Huskies will play the Rams in 7pm fixtures at the Derwent Entertainment Centre on June 6 and at the Silverdome in Launceston on June 8.
