The 5G network has been under development for several years and offers faster speeds and more reliable connections on smartphones compared with the current 4G network.
Telstra 5G is launching in 10 Australian cities on Tuesday with two new products, the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and HTC Hub.
The 5G network will become the new norm and could offer speeds up to 1GB per second in the future.
Telstra Tasmanian regional general manager Michael Patterson said the network would expand "almost five-fold" in the coming 12 months.
"Telstra have started rolling out 5G in 10 cities around Australia, including Hobart and Launceston, putting them at the forefront of the revolutionary mobile technology," he said.
"The rollout of Telstra's 5G coverage is ongoing and aims to bring the technology to areas where it matters most to customers.
"Its current footprint focuses on CBD locations and selected regional centres where more than four million people live, work or pass through every day."
