Any Moment will follow the story of four ordinary people in the 24 hours leading up to midnight on New Year's Eve.
The characters reflect on their lives, and their stories interact in surprising and touching ways, as the stroke of twelve approaches.
Writer and director Bradley McCaw said the show is "about 60 per cent" written. The rest will be developed in collaborative workshops and rehearsals in Launceston as part of the Australian Musical Theatre Festival later this month.
"It explores the idea of community - and how we're all linked by these moments that don't necessarily seem to have any real significance," he said.
"There are these these different characters - for example, a truck driver on their way home, a young teenager who's running away, a woman at a party getting drunk - and everyone's questioning: you know, 'this isn't what I thought I'd do with my life, and at any moment I'm going to make a change'.
"With that looming deadline of New Year, we all start to get a bit reflective and think about our lives."
The show features originally songs, which have been written, and Launceston audiences will be among the first to hear them at the show's public showing.
But the really special opportunity for musical theatre fanatics will likely be following Q&A. There they will get the opportunity to quiz an established director and team on how a musical is made, while they're still in the midst of the exhilarating whirlwind that is creating a new piece of art from scratch.
McCaw is hoping the experience may inspire attendees to dust off that play they've had sitting in the drawer, or to get in the car and go to that cast audition.
"[The festival] is trying to establish Launceston as a new centre for musical theatre, and part of that is encouraging new works - and of course you need a place to do that, you need people to come together to do that - but I think there's a run-off effect where each new [work] inspires other people to do it and makes it seem possible," he said.
"I think the biggest challenge with these things can be making the leap and doing it, so I think that's the main objective."
A University of Tasmania academic will also be writing a blog about the process of writing the musical in Launceston from an outsider's perspective.
Bradley McCaw is a multi award-winning writer, director, singer and actor, whose most recent musical was the critically recognised Becoming Bill.
