Total offences in the police Devonport division spiked by a state’s highest 26.2 per cent in the first five months of the financial year, compared to the corresponding period a year earlier.
Devonport offences increased from 820 in the earlier period to 1035.
Offences in the Burnie division increased from 771 to 871, a 13 per cent increase.
Launceston retained its status as crime capital, with a 9 per cent increase from 2759 to 3008 in the police Launceston division.
That was not only the most offences in any of the 11 police divisions, but Launceston had easily the highest offence rate.
It had an annual rate of 954 offences per 10,000 residents
Devonport (585 per 10,000) and Burnie (470) had much lower offence rates than Launceston.
Offences dropped in the South, with decreases of 24.5 per cent in the Glenorchy division, 23.7 per cent in the Hobart division, 2.2 per cent in the Bridgewater division and 10.8 per cent in the South-East division.
Already the lowest offence rate division in the state, the Deloraine division had a big decrease in offences.
They dropped from 498 to 375 (24.7 per cent).
That was the biggest percentage decrease in the state.
That division’s offence rate was 144 per 10,000 people.
Only the Kingston division (187) was close to that level,
The police Central West division, taking in areas including Ulverstone, Penguin and the West Coast, had a 13.9 per cent decrease in offences.
Its total went from 540 to 465 and its offence rate was a relatively low 258 per 10,000 people.
Matters regarded as serious crimes decreased in total statewide, from 215 to 205, comparing the two five-month periods.
There were small declines in the police Western and Southern districts, to 32 and 116 respectively.
Serious crimes edged up by one to 57 in the Northern District.
Offences against police statewide dropped from 421 to 383.
Assaults of police dropped from 107 to 84.
Assaults in public places increased from 69 to 75 in the Western District.
