When Launceston Choir in the Pub punters were told their donations would be going to The Examiner’s Empty Stocking Appeal at their second meetup last week, they were ecstatic.

“People gave a little cheer,” said Sallyann Geale, the event’s organiser. “There was such a happy vibe in the air. I think that’s why everyone gave so generously.”
The free event – held at the Royal Oak Hotel – instead asks participants for a small donation towards a chosen cause or charity.
Thanks to the group’s efforts, $210 was contributed to the appeal – which has now raised $58,000 to make the season a little easier for people in need.

“We though that it was timely and decided to donate to the Empty Stocking Appeal," Ms Geale said. “It’s a great tradition.”
Funds are split equally between the City Mission, St Vincent de Pauls Society, the Salvation Army and the Benevolent Society.

Donations can be made in person, either at The Examiner office on Cimitiere Street, or at any business that contains an appeal tin.
