A 33-year-old man was shot in the face outside his house on Herbert Street about 10.20pm.
The Invermay man was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital where he underwent surgery.
A neighbour, Robert, was watching television when he heard a “horrific bang”.
“I thought it was a bomb,” he said.
“I was too scared to move.”
Robert described the victim as a very nice man and said they often spoke in the courtyard.

Detective Inspector Gary Williams said police are following a particular line of inquiry.
“There were a number of people in the area and we have taken statements from those people,” he said.
Anyone who saw two men wearing baseball caps heading towards Invermay Road or near Herbert Street between 9.40pm and 10.20pm are asked to call police on 131 444.
Both men are described as being from 175cm to 180cm tall, one was wearing shorts and the other long pants.
Police are also calling on businesses in the area to provide them with any relevant CCTV footage.
The victim and offenders are believed to be known to each other, but police continue to investigate the relationship between the three men.
“We don’t believe this is a random shooting,” Detective Inspector Williams said.
Investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
