Union members of the Forensic Science Service Tasmania were directed by the CPSU not to release reports as part of ongoing industrial action in the state, but safeguards were put in place to ensure police officers could access any information they required.
CPSU secretary Tom Lynch said the minister was deliberately misleading the public about the bans.
The industrial action only impacts minor crimes and Tasmania Police can access any data required by calling forensic services.
“The criminals the minister wants you to be frightened of are graffitiing and littering. We are not talking about robbers and murders here,” Mr Lynch said.
The industrial action is in response to the state government’s 2 per cent wage cap offered to six public sectors.
“The reason our members are taking that action is because they feel undervalued and disrespected by the government,” he said.
