The operation targeted drink and drug drivers and was held in various locations around Launceston.
Tasmania Police tested 1,064 drivers in Wellington Street, outside the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, between 8pm and 11.30pm on Friday, October 26, .
Two drivers were detected and charged with exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit, while two drivers were detected as driving with illicit drugs in their system.
Smaller operations were also run on Saturday night, when 365 drivers were tested.
During the Saturday operation one driver was detected and charged with exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit, Tasmania Police Inspector Inspector Ruth Orr.
“While we’re were happy with the overall driver behaviour, road safety is a priority for Tasmania Police and it’s concerning that people continue to run the risk of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Inspector Orr said.
“As we head into the warmer months and the festive season, operations such as these will be conducted throughout the Northern District. Drivers are reminded that speeding, not wearing seatbelts and alcohol and drugs are all contributors to the ‘fatal five’ in terms of motor vehicle crashes.
“All drivers are urged to take care on our roads and be mindful of their own safety as well as that of other road users. Remember, Tasmania Police could be anywhere, anytime,” she said.
