Mr Nott was elected as an alderman for City of Launceston council in 2002, eventually going on to serve as deputy mayor from 2009-11.
He did not contest the 2011 election, choosing instead to spend more time with his grandchildren on the mainland.
Mr Nott was an active member of the Meander Valley community prior to being elected to the City of Launceston Council, spending four year as principal of Meander Valley Primary School, as well as seven years as deputy principal of Hagley Farm Primary School.
He was also the senior football coach at Hagley during 1971, and coached the Meander Valley senior team in 1973 and 1974.
Mr Nott said he had been asked by number of people to run for mayor or deputy mayor, but decided instead on council.
