It is the first time a Tasmanian team has been selected to take part.  

The school took part in the state Australian AllStar Cheerleading Federation finals in Hobart about a week ago. 

School directors Dee Gillen and Tanya Lanham said the students were incredible. 

“They worked really hard. We’re still in a bit of shock about how well they went and how it all happened. We’re very proud,” Ms Gillen said. 

Every team from the school, that entered the competition, placed. 

Now, the school is preparing to be the first Tasmanian team to represent that state at the national championships. 

“On the Saturday and the Sunday all the teams from around Australia compete and our teams will be up against them,” Ms Lanham said. 

“We’re also going to look at taking some of our dance teams that placed really well and scored really highly.” 

Their senior team, Aphrodite, will compete in nationals as a “warm up”, before taking on the nation’s best of the best in the pinnacle competition on Monday, November 26.  

The pinnacle competition is invite only. 

About 50 students from the school are expected to take part in the national competitions, and will spend the next few months taking on the judge’s advice. 

“We got a score card at the end of the night and got to speak to the world judges which was really incredible,” Ms Gillen said.  

“We have taken the score card and every week we will make it better and use the judges feedback to make it better and better overall.”

Polishing the stunts will be key to ensure they get a higher score. 

“That will make them feel like they’re worthy of competing against the best of the best in Australia,” she said.

The national competition will happen in November. 

“A lot of the schools competing have been around for 10 or 20 years and we’ve only been around for 17 months,” Ms Gillen said. 

“So it’s quite a privilege and an honour. We’ll use the experience as a really nice growing tool for the school and for the kids to learn a lot out of it.”
