Emergency services were called to the home on Vermont Road, next to the Mowbray Hotel, just after 6.30am.
Firefighters battled both the blaze and wet and windy conditions, but managed to contain the incident to the rear of the home.
Investigators remained at the scene late Wednesday morning and it was believed the fire was caused by an electrical fault.
Nobody was home at the time, due to the property undergoing renovations.
The extent of the damage remains unknown.
