About 150 people filled the pews of the Launceston Holy Trinity Church to see EsqueOpera’s Serenade.
Launceston’s Benjamin Martin and internationally acclaimed soprano Jane Edwards, who have been performing together for about 20 years, took to the stage.
“[The show] was a lieder recital. Lieder is German for songs and we’re performing the works of [Franz] Schubert, [Richard] Strauss and [Johannes] Brahms,” Martin said.
“The crowd will get a lovely afternoon of music from the early 1800s.”
Martin’s performance followed his recent shows at the inaugural Melbourne International Festival of Lieder and Art Song.
In the only performance, the duo agreed it was the church’s acoustics that made it such a fun venue.
The church also has a family connection for Edwards, whose father was once the choir master and organist at the church. Lynda Jessup played the piano.
