Stallholders will be offering alternatives to patrons as part of Plastic Free July.
The market was inspired to take on the challenge by working group Plastic Free Launceston.
Alex Hardman from Plastic Free Launceston said they were encouraging people to look at alternatives to the way people consume plastic.
Mr Hardman said the group was focusing on coffee cups, plastic bags, water bottles and straws.
He said straws were often “unnecessary for 99 per cent of the population”.
Stainless steel, bamboo and paper were some of the reusable options he suggested.
“One of the major issues facing us is the rapid build up of plastic pollution,” he said.
The group had also reached out to Launceston businesses and schools and invited them to join in the campaign.
Eerin Hardman, also from Plastic Free Launceston, said they were encouraging schools to start using reusable beeswax wraps instead of cling wrap.
The group was also pushing businesses to limit the availability of plastic straws.
“We understand people need them for certain circumstances, but a lot of people don’t need them,” she said.
Plastic Free July were challenging people to “choose to refuse” single-use plastic, during this month.
- Harvest Launceston is held every Saturday 8.30am to 12.30pm at 71 Cimitiere Street, Launceston.
