Mrs Johnston’s 24-year-old son Joe, who has cystic fibrosis, spent months at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital after undergoing a double lung transplant.
In a gesture of support, Mrs Johnston’s colleagues at Glenara Lakes Youngtown organised a fundraiser.
Held earlier this month, the event raised $10,000 in just over three hours.
On Friday the money was presented to the family.
In other news:
“It is just heartwarming. I would have never asked for help, but this will go a long way,” Mrs Johnston said.
“I haven’t been able to work for eight months, so knowing this money is there takes a lot of pressure off.”
Event organiser Lee-Ann Patterson said it was a fantastic night for a very worthy cause.
“When someone needs a helping hand, we all get behind them and rally,” she said.
“That’s just what we do here and I know Jenny would have done the same for any of us.”
