In her budget reply Ms O’Connor said action on climate was at the heart of the Greens’ alternative budget.
She also promised $100 million for affordable housing, $30 million to tackle homelessness and $16 million for 50 new child safety officers.
“In a truly 21st century budget, we must place the highest possible value on delivering a safe climate for our children and grandchildren,” Ms O’Connor said.
“The future health and prosperity of our island and its people demands a sustained, evidence based investment in climate mitigation and adaptation.”
The Greens also vowed to end funding for the V8 super cars and wind up Forestry Tasmania, now known as Sustainable Timber Tasmania, which they said would save $105 million over the forward estimates.
“We will always prioritise this place and its people over private profit,” Ms O’Connor said.
“The budget last week prioritised corporate profit over the well being of the Tasmanian people and roads and bridges over housing.
“The costing in our budget has been robustly tested by Treasury because they the commitments are what we took to the state election.”
Ms O’Connor said housing should be a priority for all governments.
“We understand having a place to call home is a fundamental human right being denied to a growing number of Tasmanians,” she said.
“Rather than splash tens of millions of dollars in public funding on a cable car at Cradle Mountain and commercial developments in the wilderness, the Greens would invest in healthy communities, quality public education and an increase in the supply of secure, affordable, energy efficient housing.”
