The project is expected to provide more than 200 direct jobs, and about 160 during construction.
The Hermal Group had had 350 inquiries about employment opportunities and 150 businesses had offered to work on the project, Resources Minister Guy Barnett said on Tuesday.
“The ground-breaking project gives a significant boost to business confidence in the region and the forestry industry,” Mr Barnett said.
“Once complete, the new facility will be Australia’s largest plantation-based hardwood mill and the first ever hardwood cross-laminated production plant.
“The Hermal Group have advised that they will lodge a development application with the Burnie City Council and have committed to an open and transparent approach to the regulatory process.”
Hermal Group senior manager of special projects James Lantry said the company believed it had secured an outstanding site for a world class facility.
The company aims to start production in 2019.
