“I have two children – my daughter Amalie is seven and my son Rhys is forever two – he died,” she says.
Rhys Hodgetts’ life ended suddenly in 2016 when he suffered a febrile convulsion in his sleep.
Now his parents are determined to continue the legacy of their “happy little boy”.
On Saturday about 240 people are expected to attend a sold-out event in honour of Rhys.
By establishing a foundation in her son’s name, Mrs Hodgetts is hoping to raise awareness and support for bereaved families in Launceston and to help educate people about dealing with grief.
“The response we have had, not just from our family and friends, but from people who didn’t even know Rhys has just been incredible,” she said.
“Saturday is going to be a very important day for us, but looking at the bigger picture we want to start a conversation.
“There is too much stigma associated with grief and the grieving process and we want to help change that.”
On Saturday a Rally for Rhys High Tea will be held at Country Club Tasmania, in partnership with online support group Bittersweet.
With more than $14,000 already raised, Mrs Hodgetts is hoping to raise $20,000 to establish a mural and memorial seat to give families, but in particular grieving siblings, a place to sit and reflect.
Since establishing the foundation, Mrs Hodgetts said she had become connected with a number of “inspirational” women dealing with their own loss.
Support group Bittersweet was established by Launceston’s Lisa Bird, whose son Joshua Gough was killed in a car accident in 2008.
Ms Bird has helped organise Saturday’s event, which will also feature guest speaker Carrie Twine.
Ms Twine’s brother Brock Hesketh died in 2003 and on Saturday she will share her own story of loss.
“The thing with grief is it never really goes away,” she said.
“Even though death is very sudden, the pain of grief stays with you forever.
“On Saturday I hope to share that message.”
