On Sunday, the Tasmania branch will host an open day to help celebrate the organisation’s 90th anniversary.
From 10am to 3pm the Evandale hangar will be open to the public, with tours highlighting the organisation’s services – including a flight simulator.
Royal Flying Doctor Service Tasmania president Malcolm White said the free event was something the whole family could enjoy.
“Sunday will be a celebration, but we also want to engage the next generation with the unique services RFDS provides,” he said.
“We want to give people and kids in particular, the opportunity learn more about the history of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
“I grew up with the stories of John Flynn, but we want to keep that history alive for the next generation.
“It is amazing when people come to these events, the amount of people who say – my aunty or uncle, dad or mum, have been in this plane.
“The reach the service has in the community suddenly becomes very real.
“It is a very well known organisation not just here in Tasmania, but across Australia.
“I think there are few organisations that after 90 years, remain as vital, needed and valued as the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
“I think we can look forward to another 90 years.”
On Sunday, children will be able to experience a “real rescue” by wearing virtual reality headsets, experiencing the flight radar and simulator.
It will also be the first time the service’s new hangar will be open to the public, after opening in June last year.
