The annual Convicts and Wenches Beach Run saw a record year with over 300 participants, said race director Michelle Frost.
Participants were urged to dress up for the race, with prizes going to the best dressed runners.
Event organiser Ian Cornelius said the race was named to commemorate the history of the convicts who “essentially became the founders of Australia”.
“To have descended from convict stock is not a stain, it’s an honour,” he said.
“Port Arthur is a stark reminder of harsh punishment but let’s remember that less than five per cent of convicts were ever sent there.
“It is not truly representative at all of convict life in Tasmania.”
The event gave participants the option of a 50-kilometre run, 25-kilometre run, 12-kilometre run or walk, five-kilometre run or walk, or 50-kilometre relay.
- The male and female winners of the five-kilometre race were Sam McKee and Erin Giles.
- The winners of the 12-kilometre race were Anthony Gangell and Rachel Young.
- The winners of the 25-kilometre race were Andrew Hagger and Deb Pauna.
- The winners of the 50-kilometre race were David Bailey and Marlins Neild.
- The winners of the 50-kilometre relay were John Claridge and Rob Brunning.
