Bass Labor MHR Ross Hart introduced the Labor leader to the Tramsheds stage, where he addressed a mix of past and present party members.
Mr Shorten’s visit comes just two days after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Northern Tasmania to announce funding for the Tamar River.
The timing of his appearance was not lost on the Member for Maribyrnong, who couldn’t resist taking a swipe at his Liberal counterpart.
“On Tuesday, there was a radio interview with a man who said he has seen fresh Tasmanian tiger paw prints on the East Coast,” he said.
“On Friday, there were reports Malcolm Turnbull had been in Northern Tasmania, which I also found difficult to believe.”
The biggest cheer of the afternoon, however, was reserved for Mr Shorten’s introduction of Tasmanian Labor Leader Rebecca White, who he described as a “warrior for the working and middle class of Tasmania.”
