It wasn’t until he received a call from Good Morning Country that he discovered the prize would be more at home on someone’s wall.
The guitar had been signed by all of the 2017 Golden Guitar winners, including Travis Collins, Sara Storer, and Troy Cassar-Daley.
Mr McCarthy said when he discovered the prize was a collectable, he decided to put the instrument up for auction on erBay to raise funds for StGiles.
The listing – Good Morning Country Golden Acoustic Guitar signed by 2017 Golden Guitar Winners - will be open until 7pm on February 25.
While it wouldn’t help him take up the guitar again, Mr McCarthy said he hoped the auction would help StGiles with their work with people of all abilities.
“This is a totally unique memento that could be yours,” he said.
StGiles engagement and profile general manager Danielle Blewett said the organisation was grateful for the generous gesture.
All of the funds raised by the auction would go towards the organisation’s music and arts programs, Ms Blewett said.
Good Morning Country executive producer Kevin Walsh said the radio competition was held for about five weeks.
Mr McCarthy’s name was pulled out of the draw for the signed guitar in late December, Mr Walsh said.
“Tasmanians are one of our biggest listener bases,” he said.
