A development application has been lodged with the City of Launceston, to create ‘pod accommodation’ at 17-19 Wellington Street.
The concept allows visitors to sleep in a bed encased in a capsule with individualised control of the lighting, ventilation and entertainment.
“The capsule visitor accommodation fills a gap in the market between regular hotels and backpacker hostels,” the application said.
“This is particularly useful for short term accommodation required by supporters of footy matches at the stadium and short term visitors and tourists at the new UTAS campuses at Inveresk.”
The proposal, which requires a change of use permit, was submitted to the council by architects from David Denman and Associates.
“This site presents an exciting opportunity for a novel business concept to encourage tourism and support nearby businesses, and hinges on the successful change of use to visitor accommodation.”
The plans include a cafe at the property’s street front, with accommodation at the rear of the building.
