The convict-built wall at Franklin House will be rebuilt after the $80,000 restoration works was announced on Thursday. The funds will be split evenly between the council and the state government. The wall was construction around the 1840s or 1850s when Franklin House was being run as a boarding school for boys.
Committee member Julie Dineen said the headmaster at the time felt the wall needed to be constructed because the boys kept slipping off to the inn next door.
“He thought it would stop them from spending too much improper time at the inn,” she said.
Treasurer Peter Gutwein said Franklin House was one of Tasmania’s ‘historic gems’ and it was great to see two tiers of government working together for a common goal.
The state government was lobbied for help by Launceston alderman Simon Wood and Robin McKendrick.
