The roads built for the site are all made of packed earth, that can get pretty muddy when thousands of people, vehicles and animals tramp over it for three days.
That’s not to say anything about the weather – Agfest and rain seem to be synonymous and that’s a recipe for disaster for anyone wishing to try out their new white Nikes to make a fashion statement.
OTHER CLOTHES
While we are on the subject of clothes, it’s important that any Agfest attendee to make like a Scout leader and ‘be prepared.’
While it traditionally rains for at least part of Agfest each year, it’s still important to remember what time of year it is. Heading into the cooler months, the Agfest site can be at the mercy of rain, wind, hail or sunshine (they were hit by a mini-tornado last year) – which does make it hard to think about what to wear.
If you are prepared with an all-weather jacket you will be prepared for anything Mother Nature throws at you.
TRANSPORT
With thousands of people heading to the one place, the best advice to give about getting to Agfest with appropriate transport is TO LEAVE EARLY.
Traffic can get banked on the highway early with people coming from both Launceston and from the North-West. While Rural Youth’s Agfest committee do a stellar job with traffic management, the sheer number of people means it can get hectic at times.
The best advice is to leave early to get to and from the site, to ensure you miss the crush of people.
PLAN YOUR DAY
The Agfest site is huge. Those who have never been there are often surprised at the amount of stalls the committee can cram onto the site. It would take the three full days to see everything.
Thankfully, a helpful guide on some of the highlights can be found online – to help people plan. In addition, on-the-day guides can be found at the site, that has a site map and a program of some of the featured events.
If you get to the site and don’t know which way to turn (don’t worry, that’s a pretty normal reaction), most of the action ends up on the Main Street of the site and in the central arena – both are easy to find.
