Hobart father John Ward, 42, and son Stephen, 13, were found by emergency personnel on Thursday after spending three days in almost-freezing conditions near Lake Pedder.
Tasmania Police said the pair did not have the greatest of gear for the harsh conditions, but rescuers praised them for their efforts once they became lost, which helped to save their lives.
Search and Rescue officer Michael Preshaw found the pair near the track and said Stephen was a hero.
“Once they found themselves in that position, they stayed put and waited for someone to come and find them, which was exactly the right thing to do,” he said.
Start off on a smaller walk, get advice on what’s happening with the weather.
- Wes Moule
Experienced bushwalking guide Wes Moule said it was important to be prepared before embarking on any walk.
“Start off on a smaller walk, get advice on what’s happening with the weather,” Mr Moule said.
“At least hire an EPIRB or a personal locator if you’re inexperienced.”
Mr Moule congratulated the duo on filling out a log book at the start of the walk, and emphasised that others should always do the same.
