The Ponting Foundation’s Biggest Game of Cricket will head to Launceston in January and will see Hawthorn and North Melbourne football clubs test their skills in a T20 match.
All funds raised from ticket sales will go back to helping children with cancer and other health projects in Tasmania.
Premier Will Hodgman announced on Monday that the state government would match the amount of funds raised, doubling the proceeds going back to help sick children.
Ricky Ponting said that with a month still to go until the match, more than 5000 match tickets had already been sold.
“The idea for this game was born on the back of a tribute game I had in Launceston a couple of years ago, which ended up being a great success,” he said.
“It’s a great contribution to our foundation and every dollar we raise from this game will go back into the Tasmanian health system.
“[Cancer is] a disease that is crippling a lot of our young people and young families across Australia.”
In the match at the University of Tasmania Stadium, Ponting will host the North Melbourne side, while former Australian teammate Damien Fleming will lead Hawthorn.
“We’re really excited about how the game is coming together,” Ponting said.
“When you get to see professional athletes out of their comfort zone and playing in other sports, its ultra entertaining for the viewer and you get to see the competitive edge of professional athletes.”
Mr Hodgman said Ponting and his foundation had been a major contributor to the Tasmanian community and in assisting families and children with cancer.
“There’s a wonderful opportunity for the government to be co-partners with the foundation,” he said.
“It’s a wonderful chance for us to support the Ponting Foundation, Ricky, and his team’s efforts.
“We think this is a great chance to demonstrate that the Tasmanian people are very grateful and thankful, and we want to do our bit as well to encourage people to get along to the game.”
The Biggest Game of Cricket will be held in Launceston on January 27 from 7pm.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and are available from the Ponting Foundation website.
