The Victorian resident and his two immaculately prepared Harley-Davidsons will be among entrants at the Australian Historic Road Racing Championships, at Symmons Plains, on November 18, 19 and 20.
Hemsworth said that classic racing rekindled his love of the sport he first tasted in the early 1970s on a 900cc Kawasaki Z1.
“I retired in 1979 as other things took over in my life, but a mate I used to knock about with in the ‘70s, Lewis McEwan, introduced me to classic racing about three years ago,” Hemsworth said.
“He’s always been a Harley fanatic and we took an old side-valve Harley road bike out to an event called the Broadford Bonanza, where we did some parade laps and I had a ball.
“We spent nearly two years developing that bike into a racer.
“We’ve done pretty well with it, mostly due to its reliability, even though that’s generally believed to be a contradiction in terms when it comes to Harleys.”
The Lewis-Hemsworth team finished third in the Period 4 unlimited class at the 2016 Victorian Championships, at Broadford, in April, and equal third at the Phillip Island Classic, in January.
Hemsworth said that the result underscored the technical work put in by Mr McEwan. Hemsworth said that he was looking forward to returning to Symmons Plains, a track at which he last competed in 1976.
