Thursday and Friday have seen heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds, gusting up to 60km/h. While the rain is expected to ease after Friday evening, temperatures will drop and winds will remain strong until Sunday.
The culprits are a series of fronts crossing the state, “[They] are bringing up a lot of cold air from Antarctica in a southwesterly stream and thats what's causing the snowline to drop quite significantly again,” said Bureau of Meteorology Duty Forecaster, Deborah Holmes.
The weekend will see a cold snap, with forecasts for snow down to 200m and expected wind gusts of up to 90km/h. The coldest day will be Saturday, but the wintery weather will linger into next week, with strong westerly winds bringing cooler air across the state said Ms Holmes.
Snow chasers in the north might be out of luck though, with the heaviest snowfall predicted in the south. A dusting of snow is even predicted for Hobart's suburbs. The Central Plateau will also get a covering of snow.
“Snow is not quite as likely around the north east, there’s just not as much rainfall there on Saturday,” said Ms Holmes.
But don’t be fooled by the chilly snap, this winter has been warmer than average said Ms Holmes. She adds that a period of La Nina has also seen a much wetter winter. She said the icy and wild weather is actually typical of weather at this time of year.
