The annual challenge encourages thousands of students from across Australia to test their skills and to gain an interest in the field.
Hundreds of students from eight different schools travelled from far and wide to compete in Monday’s challenge.
Queenstown’s Mountain Heights School year 10 student Jack Nankivell, 15, and his team were challenged to design and create a miniature chair that was tested on the weight it could hold.
“It was tricky to come up with the design but then we thought about it all together and it was alright,” Jack said.
University of Tasmania state coordinator of the challenge Susie Haley said that with a shortage people following science and engineering pathways, the day opened doors for students.
Eight more schools will compete in Launceston on Tuesday.
