FEDERAL Defence Minister Marise Payne has given the go ahead for a $7.2 million investment to improve troop rations produced at the Scottsdale defence facility.

The funding will go towards Microwave Assisted Thermal Sterilisation equipment, that will extend food shelf life, quality and nutrition, for troops, possible humanitarian contingencies and there maybe future commercial ventures.
On Wednesday, Minister Payne was joined by Bass Liberal MHR Andrew Nikolic at the Defence Science and Technology Group facility in Scottsdale, for a tour and the announcement .
Mr Nikolic welcomed the funding for the Scottsdale facility, saying it was something he had been trying to achieve for the past five years.
With his military background, he said, ``...I’m well aware of the importance of combat rations and the opportunities this technology offers for military and humanitarian applications.''
The MATS research and development plant will be located within the Defence Food and Nutrition Centre at Scottsdale, with a production facility in Launceston.
