He asked the jury if there was any prospect that genuine agreement would be reached with further deliberations and the jury foreman said: "No on both counts".
The jury was discharged about 4.10pm.
EARLIER: Jurors in a trial of a man accused of involvement in a double murder have been deliberating for more than seven hours across two days.
David Ronald Morgan, 57, is on trial in the Supreme Court in Launceston.
The South Australian man has pleaded not guilty to the murders of Angela Maree Hallam, 31, and Joshua Eric Newman, 21, on the night of August 15, 2012.
Both the Crown and defence agree it was Marco Daniel Rusterholz who physically stabbed the couple to death and set their bodies alight in a unit in Pioneer Parade, Ravenswood.
On Wednesday morning, Justice David Porter told the jury the time had been reached where he could accept a majority verdict in relation to the alternate count of manslaughter.
However, he emphasised to the jury that a guilty verdict for murder must remain unanimous.
The Crown has argued that Mr Morgan formed an agreement with Rusterholz to "bash" Ms Hallam which made him criminally liable for the murders, but the defence has asserted that Rusterholz acted alone.
