The two organisations combined to win two categories at the Planning Institute of Australia's Tasmanian awards night, which was held in Hobart earlier this month.
The Legana Structure Plan was given the Planning Institute of Australia's tick of approval for best small project, with the organisation applauding the council for demonstrating "an incisive approach to a complex locality that has suffered from poor past planning".
The Greater Launceston Plan, which is supported by a number of Northern councils, won best large project and was credited as being a "well-researched and rigorous piece of planning work".
West Tamar mayor Christina Holmdahl said she was thrilled the hard work of those involved in the Legana Structure Plan had been acknowledged.
"The award is recognition of council's commitment to future planning at the highest level," she said.
"We are especially proud that the professionalism of all the staff that have been involved in the process has been recognised."
Cr Holmdahl said the plan was made in alignment with both the considerable population growth predicted in the Legana region over the coming years and the need for the Legana shopping precinct to play a town-centre role.
"We wanted to ensure that any growth that happened in the Legana area was well-conceived and well-executed and would enhance the area.
"The council's vision for Legana is that it be a well-planned precinct with capacity and flexibility to change to meet future needs of the community."
