The crash occurred just before 3.50pm yesterday on Girrabong Road at Lenah Valley, near Baldwin Place.
Police say the man was walking south on Girrabong Road towards Kalang Avenue when he attempted to cross the road. He was then struck by a gold 2001 Mazda Premacy, which was travelling north.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene by Tasmania Ambulance personnel.
The driver of the vehicle - a 37-year-old man also from Lenah Valley - was uninjured in the crash.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing, but police say that speed and drugs are not believed to be a contributing factor.
Crash investigator Sergeant Rod Carrick would like to hear from any member of the public who witnessed the crash or saw either the vehicle or the man beforehand.
