Water safety is the number-one priority for those approaching the pastime, a factor well noted by Deloraine Rotary Club.
The club's free learn-to-swim program was held early this month at Deloraine Council Pool, another notch in its history of more than three decades.
The program was established after the need for water safety in Meander Valley was identified.
Austswim instructor Kali Bierens saw almost 80 children attend from across the municipality.
Mrs Bierens said participants were mostly aged between five and 14 years old.
"The program was developed as a Rotary Community Project with the aim of teaching children to swim and help in reducing death by drowning of our children," she said.
"The incidents of drowning has increased in Australia over the years.
"Many children in rural Tasmania live on properties that have dams and creeks or are bordered by rivers such as the Meander."
She said last year's Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report found 266 people drowned in Australian waterways, with nine deaths occurring in Tasmania.
