The answer for Fingal's Malcolm Woods is an astonishing 31 seconds.
He achieved the incredible feat at last year's Fingal Valley Festival, before going on to represent Tasmania in various roof bolting and coal shovelling competitions across the country earlier this year.
After returning from the Australian coal shovelling titles in the Blue Mountains last week, Mr Woods said the secret was simple: shovel fast.
"You just have to keep practising, I reckon," he said.
"It's all about strength.
"I've been doing it competitively for the last 10 years."
When he's not shovelling, Mr Woods spends his time organising the Fingal Valley Festival alongside his wife.
Despite living in Launceston, the Fingal native still spends a lot of time in the state's east.
"Preparations for the festival are looking better than they ever have," he said.
"We'll have coal shovelling at next year's event, including women's competitions. It also looks like we'll have shovellers and roof bolters from Queensland and New South Wales as well."
Mr Woods has confirmed he will be competing in the coal shovelling event again next year.
The Fingal Valley Festival will take place on February 28.
