The Anglican Church should not investigate itself when it receives complaints of child sexual abuse, a bishop has told a royal commission.
Bishop Ronald Stone was assistant bishop of Hobart in the 1990s, when complaints of abuse surfaced against The Hutchins School, but said he had limited contact with the school.
Bishop Stone said he though the church should not be the responsible body for handling internal abuse complaints.
"I have never felt it appropriate for the church to investigate the church," he told the Royal Commission on Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse this morning.
"What I'm hoping might come out of the commission, to help us all, is some suggestion were you have a one stop shop professional standards director."
"The Anglican Church is so complex, so any complainant really needs to have some clear one stop where you go for help."
The commission will hear continue to hear evidence from former headmaster John Bednall this afternoon.
