THERE’S a sentence you might hear at the Royal Launceston Show you’re unlikely to catch anywhere else: ‘‘Can you get me a dagwood dog?’’
Day one of the family favourite attracted a crowd of about 15,000 who were treated to sunny weather for much of the day.
The all-new lay-out – which saw sideshow alley and rides separated from the more family-friendly free activities – proved a hit with many patrons.
Launceston’s Kelly Franks said the set-up had given the Inveresk event a more open feel.
Like most children, her son Cameron enjoyed the rides and showbags.
The crowd around Noah’s Thoroughbred Racing Pigs was at least three-deep and Canadian entertainers, Lumberjack Bonanza, also attracted a strong audience.
Launceston Show Society president Alan Crawford said the day had been ‘‘really exciting’’.
‘‘There’s just a few finer things that we probably need to look at, like trying to get people to sideshow alley,’’ he said.
‘‘The numbers are definitely up, probably because of the entertainment, the publicity – the whole thing is just fantastic.’’
He encouraged people to attend today to catch the last of a wandering Austin Powers impersonator.
