The works form part of Australia Post's heritage works program, and are expected to be completed by the end of July.
An Australia Post spokeswoman said all external building surfaces would be repainted and resurfaced, the interior repainted, and roof and gutters replaced.
She said the post office would remain fully operational during these works.
A post office opened on the Cameron Street site on January 1891.
Australia Post removed its retail arm from the premises in 1995, but kept its private post boxes on the site.
The change sparked fears that Australia Post would eventually sell the historic building.
Full postal services were returned to Cameron Street two years ago after hard lobbying from Launceston's Keep Our Post Office committee, chaired by former Launceston MLC Don Wing.
The building was added to the Commonwealth Heritage List in 2004 as an early example of the Federation Queen Anne style of architecture.
