People in areas south of a line from Strahan to Swansea, and the far North-East coast, are expected to be affected.

Damaging winds are forecast to hit the North-East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South-East districts.

Westerly winds averaging 50-60 km/h, with peak gusts of 110 km/h are expected.

Damaging winds are forecast to ease mid to late afternoon.

In the past six hours the strongest gusts recorded have been 137 km/h on Mount Wellington, 131 km/h at Maatsuyker Island, 111 km/h at Scotts Peak, and 104 km/h in Hobart.

Authorities advise that gusty winds will make road conditions dangerous.

The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:

*Secure or store away loose items around your house, yard or balcony.

*Take care when driving on exposed roads, bridges and causeways. 

*Remain indoors as much as possible.

*Keep clear of fallen power lines.
