The Launceston City Council announced this week that it would seek $1.5million in the lead-up to the state election to cover the Kings Meadows rivulet to help the development of a Big W store.
Premier Lara Giddings said she had made the Launceston City Council aware of the government's newly established Major Development Infrastructure Assistance Fund, which will provide grants of between $100,000 and $1 million to encourage developers to bring forward projects.
She said she had encouraged the council to work Big W developer Emmanuel Kalis to apply for the assistance.
Opposition Leader Will Hodgman said he would discuss this proposal and the council's other priorities leading into next year's election when he met them next week.
The council has estimated that the Big W development would create $50 million in initial investment.
