Just after 4am this morning, the brakes on a log truck caught fire, immobilising the trailer section of the vehicle.
Police say that the trailer is on the side of the road on the highway, about 3km south of Epping Forest in the north-bound lanes.
Motorists are asked to drive with care in the area as there may be people on the road.
The Tasmania Fire Service says that the weather is clear in the area, but fog may set in at daylight.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a road weather alert for most of the state, with ice and frost on susceptible roads expected to make driving conditions dangerous.
The warnings specifically listed parts of the North West Coast, Central North, North East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.
