The fire was reported at 10.15am and was then 1.7 hectares.
Strong winds are causing spot fires to sprout up to one kilometre in front of the main fire front.
Fire crews from Tasmania Fire Service and Forestry Tasmania are on site, but say firefighting efforts are impeded because the fire is burning in an inaccessible area.
A spokeswoman for Tasmania Fire Service said residents in Davis Gully Road and Elephant Pass could be affected.
Those communities were burnt in the East Coast bushfires in 2006.
The spokeswoman warned that spot fires may threaten properties ahead of the main fire front.
Embers, smoke and ash may be seen in St Marys and south of Elephant Pass.
Residents have been warned to act now to protect their homes and family.
People without a fire plan have been advised to prepare to leave.
Non-residents have been advised to stay away from the are.
Meanwhile, police have closed Ellendale Road, Dawson Road, and Lake Repulse Road where it meets the Lake Highway in central Tasmania.
Police have evacuated campers and farmers around the lake.
No traffic will be allowed into the area, with the exception of emergency vehicles.
