A government spokesman confirmed an investigator from the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment visited the site at Warrentina, between Derby and Winnaleah, on Saturday, and that the investigation was ongoing.
Once the investigation is complete, the department will decide whether to take any further action, including legal action, he said.
A local prospector, Shaun Malkin, discovered the pile of rotting wallabies two weeks ago.
Mr Malkin said the wallabies appeared to have been poisoned with 1080-laced carrots on a nearby farm.
The department's wildlife manager Gary Davies said on Friday that farmers can obtain permits to use 1080 to poison pests, using carrot or swede as a bait.
However, the permit conditions stipulate that poisoned carcasses must be collected and disposed of by burial or incineration within 24 hours.
