Planned burns continue in North as TFS ramps up Autumn fuel reduction

TFS chief officer Dermot Barry said he's seen bushfire programs like those proposed this season work effectively, with previous burns helping firefighters to contain bushfires at both Sisters Beach and Dynnyrne.

"We know this because infrared footage taken from our specialised intelligence gathering helicopter showed embers from the bushfire falling into the fuel reduction burn area. Because we had already reduced the fuel load in that area the embers simply went out," he said.

TFS expects to perform more than 340 strategic burns this autumn, in preparation for next summer. Since it began in 2014, the program has conducted over 1000 strategic burns across Tasmania.

"Not every burn will be completed this season, but we aim to have a large number to choose from so we can make the most of opportunities when they arise."
