The fund's closing date has been pushed until January 31, 2022 to allow prospective businesses more time to apply for a $1500 grant. The $1 million program was launched in August this year by hospitality and events minister Sarah Courtney, and has thus far granted applications from more than a hundred businesses.
The state government is hoping the cash injection will allow regional businesses to re-invest in the lead up to borders opening next month.
To be considered for the grants, a business's main function must be hospitality and the venue must offer in-house seating. Furthermore, the business must be located outside of the greater Hobart and Launceston city areas, hold an ABN and be registered for GST.
If deemed eligible, businesses are free to use the funds for anything from hiring performances to minor renovations or marketing, and promotion - anything that can "contribute to the revival of their business and help bring visitors into their region".
Once the proposed works are completed, businesses can access the funds in the form of a rebate by providing proof of payment.
Some of the activities already approved under the fund included new staff uniforms, signs, and equipment as well as website upgrades, newspaper advertising, and social media marketing activities.
By spurring on this kind of business reinvestment, the state government hopes the grants will encourage tourists to venture out to the regions.
While venues must get their applications in before the end of January, it is worth noting that the work undertaken through the fund doesn't need to be completed until May 30, 2022.
